Writing OutLOUD, 9/16, featuring Def Poetry Jam poet Bao Phi
|
WHAT: Writing OutLOUD Performance and Writing Series
WHEN: Thurs, September 16, 2010
TIME: 5pm (Performance) 6:30pm (Writing Wksp)
WHERE: Coffeehouse
Writing OutLOUD is a performance and workshop series that seeks to increase CCP students academic engagement by creating an active exchange between the students and established spoken word poets/performance artists in the hopes of enabling students to recognize the power of voice/writing as a means of initiating social change. Through performance, readings, workshops, and dialogue, students will be asked to consider the ways in which artists produce and present work which questions current social, political, and cultural conditions and offers alternative visions for an improved future. Students voices and inherent creativity are encouraged and valued, and opportunities are provided for students both to gain access to personal power and to develop a sense of community-mindedness.
This September's featured artist is Bao Phi. A two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, Bao Phi has appeared on HBO Presents Russell Simmons Def Poetry, and a poem of his appeared in the 2006 Best American Poetry anthology. His poems and essays are widely published in numerous publications including Screaming Monkeys and Spoken Word Revolution Redux. He has also released several CDs of his poetry, such as the recently sold-out Refugeography to his newest CD, The Nguyens EP. He has performed in venues and schools across the country, from the Nuyorican Poets Café to the University of California, Berkeley. He was featured in the award-winning documentary feature film The Listening Project as an American listener who traveled the world to talk to every day people about global issues and politics.
All members of the college community are welcome to attend the event
To Faculty: Please encourage your students to attend. The topic of focus in Bao's poetry/performance set will be cross-cultural understanding and community building, especially within the context of Asian-black relations (as a way to explore the South Philly High assaults last fall/winter).
Offering extra credit to students for attending would be greatly appreciated.
PLEASE CONTACT ME TO:
1) Obtain copies of Bao's poems for use in the classroom
2) Schedule a classroom visit in which I share poetry and talk about the event with students
3) Request flyers for the event
4) Ask any other questions you may have

Japan Studies Deadline Feb. 1
|
To: Community College of Philadelphia Faculty Colleagues
From: Mary Griffin, English Department
Re: JSA Freeman Summer Institute May 23-June 10, 2010
If you are interested in integrating Japan studies into your courses, I'd like to encourage you to apply to the Freeman Institute for Infusing Japan Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum, which is scheduled to be held from May 23-June 10, 2010 in Honolulu. I'm told this is the last summer the institute will be offered because the foundation that supports it is having financial difficulties.
I participated in the Freeman Institute last summer, and it was a near-perfect balance between academics and hands-on experience. We had consistently high quality lectures on Japanese literature, history, theater, sociology, art, religion and political science. We had daily lessons in Japanese language. We had the opportunity to try Japanese flower arranging and Noh theater, and, incredibly, we got to play drums with Kenny Endo, a world-renowned taiko drummer and teacher. We visited Pearl Harbor and more.
My fellow participants were academics from all over the U.S., representing a range of disciplines. One of the great pleasures of the institute was getting to know them and learning from them.
Of course, the opportunity to study Japanese history and culture and to integrate Japanese studies into your courses is the main point here--and the academics are demanding. But as someone who had never been particularly interested in visiting Hawaii, I was amazed by how much fun I could have in my spare time climbing Diamond Head, sipping maitais on Waikiki Beach, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, doing the Obama Honolulu tour (including the Baskin-Robbins where he worked as a teenager), flying to the Big Island one weekend to see the lava, climbing into the rain forest to see a waterfall. There are lots of opportunities to climb things!
The deadline is soon (Feb. 1) but the application process is not onerous. The website is: http://www.japanstudies.org/freeFREEMANINFO.HTM. If you decide to apply, you should let Fay Beauchamp (Director, Center for International Understanding and JSA Vice President) know as soon as possible. It helps to be specific in regards to how you will integrate Japan studies into your courses. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Mary Griffin |

| Hello!
I'd like to invite you to the 2009 Limited Editions Release Party on Thursday, October 1, from 2:00 to 3:30 in the Winnet Coffeehouse.
This year's magazine is so exciting-- I am really thrilled with the writing as well as the photography. I've asked writers to read from their work, and I've also asked photographers to speak about their pieces. The party should be fun and fascinating. And there will be refreshments!
