Writing OutLOUD is a performance and workshop series that seeks to increase CCP students academic engagement by creating an active exchange between the students and established spoken word poets/performance artists in the hopes of enabling students to recognize the power of voice/writing as a means of initiating social change. Through performance, readings, workshops, and dialogue, students will be asked to consider the ways in which artists produce and present work which questions current social, political, and cultural conditions and offers alternative visions for an improved future. Students voices and inherent creativity are encouraged and valued, and opportunities are provided for students both to gain access to personal power and to develop a sense of community-mindedness.
This September's featured artist is Bao Phi. A two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, Bao Phi has appeared on HBO Presents Russell Simmons Def Poetry, and a poem of his appeared in the 2006 Best American Poetry anthology. His poems and essays are widely published in numerous publications including Screaming Monkeys and Spoken Word Revolution Redux. He has also released several CDs of his poetry, such as the recently sold-out Refugeography to his newest CD, The Nguyens EP. He has performed in venues and schools across the country, from the Nuyorican Poets Café to the University of California, Berkeley. He was featured in the award-winning documentary feature film The Listening Project as an American listener who traveled the world to talk to every day people about global issues and politics.
All members of the college community are welcome to attend the event
To Faculty: Please encourage your students to attend. The topic of focus in Bao's poetry/performance set will be cross-cultural understanding and community building, especially within the context of Asian-black relations (as a way to explore the South Philly High assaults last fall/winter).
Offering extra credit to students for attending would be greatly appreciated.
PLEASE CONTACT ME TO:
1) Obtain copies of Bao's poems for use in the classroom
2) Schedule a classroom visit in which I share poetry and talk about the event with students
3) Request flyers for the event
4) Ask any other questions you may have
Thank you very much for your support!
